Rhinoplasty has become very popular in recent years and modern technology has shortened the surgery time and healing process. Rhinoplasty is important because the nose is the most prominent organ in the facial area. For this reason, rhinoplasty is an important and experience-based procedure.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult and delicate operations of plastic surgery. And even the slightest mistake in rhinoplasty can be seen in a very noticeable way. The reason for this is the fact that the nose is in the mid-face area and it is an organ that attracts attention at first glance to the face.

As in every surgery, doctor-patient communication is very important in rhinoplasty and the correct communication before rhinoplasty is more important than other surgeries.

When you decide to have rhinoplasty, you should be able to express yourself well and say your expectations and discomforts well while consulting your doctor. Once the correct communication has been established and the frequency is captured, your doctor will begin to tell you what can happen and what cannot be done after rhinoplasty.

While deciding on rhinoplasty, many of our patients ask: “Doctor, can you pre-sculpt statue of our post-surgical nose before the operation or show its simulation on the computer?”. The main reason for these questions is the misleading of the media. There are a total of more than 1400 plastic surgeons in Turkey, and the number of people using this asked system is not more than the fingers of one hand. For this reason, instead of expecting such a service, it is the healthiest method to get an idea by looking at the photographs of patients who previously underwent rhinoplasty.

What Are the Methods of Rhinoplasty? What Do Closed and Open Techniques Mean?

There are two surgical methods as closed and open techniques. Successful results are obtained with both techniques, and the closed technique is not applicable to every patient. Both techniques have advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of the closed approach in rhinoplasty:

There is no suture on the nasal tip, but all sutures are within nostrils called nasal mucosa. Less oedema occurs after surgery because the nasal skin is opened less.

A closed approach does not mean that there will be less bruising, but the causes of bruises; Nasal cavity narrowing operation of the patients with a wide cavity. Recently, bruises are tried to be less with new methods. This is an important criterion for patient comfort, but not a matter related to the success of the surgery. In other words, the patient who has many bruises does not mean “very bad” or “very good” or “having difficulty due to a very difficult nose”. The amount and duration of bruising vary from patient to patient and sensitive people are more likely to have bruising.

It should not be forgotten that these bruises are not permanent and disappear completely within 7-10 days.

The advantages of the open approach in rhinoplasty:

Since the intranasal area is completely opened, all the nasal structures are completely visible, therefore there is a chance to reach more easily and more effectively to the disorders. It is easier to operate within the intranasal area and to intervene in the nose if something goes wrong during the surgery. It can be applied to each patient.

The disadvantages of the open approach:

Having sutures on the nasal tip

The prolonged healing process and more oedema formation

As a result, the technique applied to each patient vary and the most appropriate technique for the patient is preferred.

What to do before rhinoplasty

Before rhinoplasty, generally, a detailed examination and the nose tomography are required. Afterwards, your photos are taken and a nose analysis is performed. The nose to be the most suitable for your face will be planned by analyzing the measurements such as the structure of your face, your lips distance, and ear length etc.

If your nasal bridge is very wide and you want it to be thinned, detailed information about the narrowing operations is shared. Rhinoplasty operation consists of the correction of the nasal deviation, correction of the nose-tip problems and improving an obstructed airway if you have a breathing problem.

Recovery Process of Breast Lift Surgery

Rhinoplasty lasts for approximately 1-3 hours, you can be discharged from the hospital on the same day or in the morning. When your surgery ends, you will have bands and acrylic nasal cast on your nose. There will be silicone and packing to breathe within nostrils. (With the advancement of technology, we do not use any discomforting tampons that completely obstruct the nose and prevent you from breathing for 2-3 days.)

There may be bruises and oedema under your eyes after rhinoplasty. To reduce this, the gel ice or frosted special glasses are used. If you do not work under a heavy duty, you can go back to your working life after 2 days. If rhinoplasty is performed with an open technique, the sutures on the nasal tip are removed on the 5th day and the suture line on the nasal tip heals without scarring.

In deviated nose correction surgery, you will have a nasal cast after the surgery. It may not be possible to take a shower while you have a cast, but you can wash your hair on the hair washing chair easily.

Your cast and packing will be taken within 7-10 days of your doctor’s approval. The bruises and swellings disappear completely after 7-10 days. And massage techniques are shown to help you heal oedema quickly.

Does Bruising Occur After Rhinoplasty?

When the cast and the packing are removed, you can see that your nose is oedematous and the nasal tip is too tilted. There is no need to worry. These swellings continue to decrease day by day and your nasal tip starts to go back to its ideal position. After rhinoplasty, bruises usually occur. When the deviated nose correction surgery is performed, the amount of these bruises is much more. However, the duration of bruising removal after rhinoplasty takes for 7-10 days.

The complete reduction process of oedema varies from person to person, lasting for average 6-12 months. After the 3rd month, the nasal lines begin to form and give you an idea about your nose. Looking in the mirror before 3 months will not mean anything.

What Should Be Considered After Nose Surgery?

We recommend that you sleep by raising your head for the first 3 to 4 weeks after rhinoplasty and lie down without turning right and left too much. Yes, it is a difficult rule to apply, but the early hits and friction in your nose may disrupt your nasal structure and cause undesirable consequences.

We do not want you to use sunglasses for 8-12 weeks after rhinoplasty or we recommend you to use light sunglasses that do not put pressure on the nose. After 3 weeks you can swim easily. (In some cases, there are some patients we allow earlier.)

After 2 months you may be able to do exercise, but you must protect your nose from blows.

Who Can Undergo Rhinoplasty?

Anyone between the ages of 18-65 can have rhinoplasty.

What Are the Possible Complications After Rhinoplasty?

The possible complications after rhinoplasty vary according to the planned procedure, but generally to sum up;

Falling or droopy nasal tip

Depression on the nasal bridge

Hematoma (accumulation of blood) in the nasal support structure (septum)

Difficulty in breathing

If any surgery is performed for a deviated septum, correction of this is failed or being deviated again within 1 year.

Infection and deviation of nasal septum structure

Small or large bone cartilage pieces on the nose bridge, etc.

Even if the possibility of these complications is very low, the patient has the right to receive information about the possible postoperative conditions. When you encounter the above conditions, the most appropriate time for correction is from the 6th month, or even in some cases after the 12th month. So if your doctor has prescribed these waiting periods, please do not think he/she temporizes you and follow your doctor’s advice.
